Delicious Homemade Bread from Scratch


  • 1 cup warm water (around 100-110 degrees)
  • 1 tsp sugar (to dissolve yeast)
  • 2 TBSP sugar
  • 2 1/4 cups flour (all purpose is fine but you can use wheat as well)
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 egg
  • 2 TBSP soft shortening
  • Butter (for greasing pan and buttering finished bread)


  1. Dissolve yeast in one cup of warm water (around 100-110 degrees) with 1 tsp sugar
  2. Measure flour *If you have a mixer with a dough hook now is it’s time to shine!*
  3. Stir sugar, 1/2 of flour, salt and yeast together
  4. Beat with a spoon until smooth, add shortening and egg.  Slowly mix in the rest of the flour and scrape the sides of the bowl.
  5. Cover with a damp cloth and let the dough rise in a warm place for an hour (doubled in size)
  6. Use a stick of butter to grease the pan of your choice (you can make rolls, a loaf or buns with this dough, really the options are limitless!)
  7. Once dough has risen you can flour a surface and knead the dough (around 5 minutes) while adding flour until dough is no longer sticking to you
  8. Add the dough to your pan of choice *if you want rolls you will need to roll them out into balls and place them in your pan **Remember that the size will DOUBLE
  9. Cover pan once more with a damp rag in a warm place for another hour
  10. Once dough has risen and is double in size you can bake!
  11. Bake at 400 degrees for 15-20 minutes
  12. Once cooked you can put butter on top (I will leave this up to you)
  13. Let cool and enjoy!
